Des and I have a great need to demonstrate our love for the children and young people that we do have in our lives. Des is a magnet to young children, largely I suspect because he is simply a big kid himself. I have read that many childless people retain childlike qualities; perhaps it’s because our lives lack the stress of the huge responsibility that goes with being a parent. Certainly on long summer days on the beach when other women are shouting at their kids not to throw stones or to splash one another, I find myself shouting to my middle-aged husband not to do the same. Watching him entertaining children and how they respond to him can be bittersweet moments for me. I can’t help but imagine how it would have been if he’d become your father when I see evidence of the dad he might have been.
